Wick Mayor Andrew Young Dear Marion: This January our Nation will once again be honor ing the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., through the Federal Holiday that has been established for his birthday. Already, this new national holiday has begun to make many Americans aware of the deep significance of Dr. King's struggle for peace and justice. • • .. The Commission is' in the process of finalizing plans. for the “ 1988 observance in Washington. As part of that program, an Inter-Faith service entitled "Remembering the Cost of War and Dedicating Ourselves to the Cause of Peace" has been scheduled to take place on January 12, from 3:30 - 4:30 p.ra., at the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial site. This service is being jointly sponsored by the Martin Luther King , Jr . Federal Holiday Commission; The Peace and Justice Community; The Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Foundation; and The Martin Luther *•' King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, Inc;' We would be honored if you would make some brief remarks to open the program on this occasion. Leaders of various religious faiths, peace groups, Vietnam veterans and others will be present at this solemn commemorative service. A. large "Candle of Peace" will be placed near the Memorial in honor of those who gave their lives in the defense of .freedom.
