MARION BARRY. JR. MAYOR THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA WASHINGTON. D.C. 20004 MAYOR BARRY'S STATEMENT FOR DIONNE WARWICK'S ADVISORY COUNCIL ON BLACK AMERICA I am proud to serve as a member of. the National Support Network for Dionne Warwick, who has taken on the challenge of serving as "Ambassador of Health" at a time when blacks and other minorities in this country, at every age level, are lagging dangerously behind other Americans by every index of health--from infant mortality, to drug abuse to AIDS. Throughout her remarkable 21-year career as a popular artist, Ms. Warwick has quietly and earnestly devoted herself to serving others. She has become a symbol that unifies all segments of the community through music. We need more people like her to take a stand on. important issues. Today, Dionne Warwick is specially concerned about the AIDS crisis in the black community. In Washington, D.C., blacks now account for more than half of all AIDS cases. It was Ms. Warwick who brought several of her friends together to record the successful "That's What Friends Are For" that raised over a million dollars for the fight against AIDS. Ms. Warwick is convinced that the knowledge and skills of black health professionals and others in institutions and community-based organizations are not being properly utilized by the nation's public and private health agencies and organi zati ons . I support her effort in seeking changes in many current policies and practices that limit access and participation by blacks and other minorities in the resolution of health problems that di sproportionatel у impact their communties. I encourage and support Ms. Warwick in her mission to mobilize the black community in a campaign aimed at sharply reducing the current high mortality and morbidity rates among American blacks. It is heartening to know that Dionne Warwick is not only giving her own unique talents and commitment to this cause, but has already begun enlisting other artists and athletes.
