STATEMENT OF MAYOR MARION BARRY BATES STREET NEWS CONFERENCE 10; 45 a.m. MONDAY, MARCH 12, 1979 Last July 13, when I was a candidate for Mayor, I held a news conference on this block and made some commitments to the citizens of the District of Columbia. My commitments were these: — To those homeowners who want to continue to live in the city, but are finding it increasingly difficult, I am committed to providing the kind of leadership that will help you to remain here. — To those who have worked and sacrificed and saved to own their homes and have indeed achieved that part of the American dream, I am committed to helping you maintain what you have achieved. — To those who are renters and would like to have an ownership stake in the community, I am committed to making it easier for you to move from renting to owning a home. — To those who must, or who choose to, remain renters, particularly low and moderate income residents, I am committed to increasing the availability of decent, safe and affordable rental housing. — I am here today as a Mayor, not a candidate, back on
