BOARD OF PAROLE AWARDS CEREMONY NOVEMBER 5, 1987 INTRODUCTION • I am happy to be here at the 2nd Annual Awards Ceremony -Tonight is a time to recognize the outstanding work of all Board of Parole employees SUCCESSFUL BOARD REORGANIZATION • I am especially pleased with the Reorganization of the Board of Parole. -Parole Supervision rightfully belongs in the Board of Parole where there can be increased parole efficiency and accountability. PAROLE UNDER ATTACK • Parole supervision was brought to the Board at a time of increasing pressure. -More people on parole under the Good Times Credit Act -Board heard 693 cases under the Emergency Powers Act -The U.S. Parole Commission was abolished. -You have even been under attack here. • You are tough people in a tough profession. • I thank you for your commitment to help protect the citizens of the District of Columbia. PAROLE WORKLOAD HAS INCREASED SIGNIFICANTLY • Selected Statistics -25% increase in adult active parolees from FY 86 to FY 87 -30% increase in parole hearings from FY 86 to FY 87 -27% increase in parole grants from FY 86 to FY 87 -19% increase in technical and criminal revocations from FY 86 to FY 87 -1000% increase in the requests for reductions in minimum sentence from FY 86 to FY 87
