Documentation related to the claims made under the D.C. Compensated Emancipation Act of 1862. Under the act, those held in bondage in the District of Columbia were freed. Those who held them in bondage were compensated based on appraisals. These records are part of the National Archives and Records Administration's Records of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia Relating to Slaves, 1851–1863.
